Gay Is Good

It's June 30th. It marks not only the completion of our journey to the mid of 2020 but also the end of Pride Month. Many of us are unaware of what pride month is. It is a month(June) of celebration to say "I am proud to be a part of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Queer community or the LGBTQ community" louder.

The month of June is recognized as the pride month, globally. It is an annual reminder that everyone is equal and has the right to respect and justice despite their gender identity. Brenda Howard was one of the other initiators of the movement. A series of riots were suggested throughout June in 1969 and so was held.

On 28th June 1969, most of the members of the LGBTQ community revolted and marched against the police raid that was made in the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village by the neighborhoods of Manhattan. Remembering this brave move, pride month is celebrated in June globally.

Although there are countries which celebrate pride month necessarily not in June. Like Moscow celebrates its pride month in May, remembering Russia's 1993 decriminalization of homosexuality.

Bisexual activist Tom Limoncelli once stated, "The next time someone asks you why LGBT Pride marches exist or why [LGBT] Pride Month is June tell them 'A bisexual woman named Brenda Howard thought it should be.'"

In India, section 377 of the Indian Penal Code or the IPC, dealt with the penal provisions regarding "against nature" sexual activities and preferences. On 6th September 2018, the Supreme Court of India ruled that Section 377 was unconstitutional, irrational, indefensible, and manifestly arbitrary, against the LGBTQ community.

The month of June of 2020 marks the 50th celebrations of the Pride. It was special though celebrated differently due to the wake of COVID-19. Many events have adapted virtual celebrations taking social distancing and public health into consideration.

The New York Pride parade was broadcasted online on June 28. The events were hosted by Ashlee Marie Preston who was the first transgender person to officially run for state office in California and also transgender actor Brian Michael Smith. The event also featured performances by Dan Levy, Janelle Monáe, Deborah Cox, Billy Porter, Luísa Sonza, and many more.

Gay pride is still tabooed and stigmatized in many parts of the world even though legal recognition has been achieved. Most of us understand that it is a matter of preference and whenever it comes to preferences, there is nothing called right or wrong.

Pride Month is all about saying that the color of love is vibrant like the rainbow colors and celebrate the diversified preferences of LOVE.
