HIGHLIGHTS

  • A sedentary lifestyle is a type of lifestyle involving little or no physical activity.
  • Research suggests that only 21 percent of adults are meeting the physical activity guidelines, while less than 5 percent perform 30 minutes of physical activity per day
  • Extended periods of inactivity can reduce metabolism and impair the body’s ability to control blood sugar levels, regulate blood pressure, and break down fat.

Sitting down for a long time and lack of physical activity will affect our metabolism and threaten our health, as physiologist Audrey Bergouignan explains here. Yet there is some good news: some of these adverse consequences can be mitigated. Scientific studies financed by space agencies can have an unexpected impact on the daily lives of simple earth-dwellers. It is the case of research performed on the consequences of physical inactivity and sedentary activity, which shed new light on the condition of men and women who are (too often) sitting down. Spending hours a day without moving, in front of a monitor or a TV, doesn't only cause back pain. The dentist disrupts our metabolism.

The "bedrest" concept stems directly from space science and consists of recreating the effects of microgravity on Earth. "In practice, we require healthy participants to lie down all the time for periods ranging from three weeks to up to three months." The researcher also uses the "dry immersion" technique, which is applied for a much shorter duration of three to five days because it is so uncomfortable: the subjects are immersed in thermo-neutral water, filled with an elastic waterproof cloth. They are freely suspended in the water mass, thus feeling a complete lack of support.

The results are clear. "In slim and stable individuals, after just a few days of metabolic abnormalities occur that are similar to those seen in diabetic or obese people, particularly concerning the body's use of lipids and carbohydrates." The first finding in these subjects under excessive sleep is hyperlipidemia – high blood fat levels – correlated with the metabolism 's inability to burn lipids. "When you become inactive, the body begins to prefer to use carbohydrates to produce the energy it needs, tending to burn fewer lipids, which will accumulate in the adipose tissues, as well as in tissues where they should not be found, such as in muscles, liver, and pancreas. Another worrying consequence of sedentary activity is the development of resistance to the effects of insulin, a hormone that signals the body to use carbohydrates circulating in the blood. "This insulin resistance, which precedes pre-diabetes and types 2 (non-genetic) diabetes, is only seen after three days! "Indicates the scientist, who is nevertheless reassuring: when the cessation of physical activity lasts only a few weeks, both hyperlipidemia and the reduction of the body's insulin sensitivity are reversible.
