What’s changed for us coz of COVID?

In 2015 at a TED Talk, tech mogul Bill Gates made a proclamation that viruses will stand to be the greatest risk of global catastrophe when compared to other threats of humanity[i]. He predicted if anything was to kill over 10 million people over the next 10 years, the likeliness it’s because of a war of missiles is much lesser than that of a virus.

Fast forward 5 years, “COVID-19 is declared to be a pandemic”. This virus has literally brought the world to a standstill. It’s brought the world to its knees. Businesses closed, schools and institutions shit, travel ban. The world is in lockdown. COVID has forced people to readjust to a new lifestyle.

Let’s take a look at how and what.

  1. Education

    Forced to close institutions for the safety of all doesn’t mean the learning had to stop. Most institutions immediately shifted into an online-based format. Lectures being conducted over platforms Google Meet, Zoom etc. Textbooks and study material have been digitalized and are available online for everyone.

    This is by far one of the most effective uses of our technology for the students.

  2. Hygiene!

    Believe it or not, people have begun taking their personal hygiene much more serious. Which is imperative to fight the virus but all in all it’s a good habit to establish and keeps our health in check as well. Health and hygiene brands have risen to the occasion and have started massive campaigns to spread awareness on cleanliness. Public spitting is a criminal offence liable to fine.

  3. Work From Home

    It’s not just institutions that have adapted to a different working process but offices as well have all adopted a work from the home format and it’s proving to be as effective. Though this practice isn’t new in the world of IT, but COVID forced the entire industry to take Work from Home to a whole new level.

  4. Cooking

    With the closing of restaurants for so long, many people have rediscovered their love for cooking and baking. Taking gourmet meals into their own hands, we’ve seen a lot of people shift into more cooking their own meals than ordering in because of COVID.

  5. Healthier lifestyle

    With COVID cases rising, the importance of a strong immune system cannot be emphasized enough. Adopting healthier diets, more exercise practices you can see in a lot of households.

 

With the ever-changing situation, we don’t how long it’ll be before we can get back to what we remember as our normal but quite frankly we will have to adjust to this new normal. Wearing masks and social distancing, our new normal.
