  • Protests in Portland

Black lives matter foundation is a global organization in the U.S., U.K. and Canada founded in 2013 their mission is to eradicate white supremacy and to intervene in violence inflicted on black communities by the state and vigilantes. This organization is working for a world where black lives are no longer systematically targeted for demise and showing their contribution and resilience in the face of deadly oppression. Though it was a social phenomenon, a hashtag that began in 2013 after the acquittal George Zimmerman for the shooting of the unarmed black teenage Trayvon Martin in Florida in June 2013, it has now imploded into one of the most significant movements seen in the U.S. history. This activist movement has been of grave concerns for decades. Now, this movement has brought tens of millions to the streets to contribute and support protests taking place every day since May. The #BlackLivesMatter hashtag has been used by millions of social media users to shine attention to cases of police brutality since 2013, and hundreds of groups bearing the name have emerged in nearly every major city in the United States.

Often called as one of America’s whitest cities, Portland, a mid-sized, liberal city in the northwestern state of Oregon has seen protesters every day for nearly two months, to protest police brutality and show solidarity in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death. This has made Portland a national centre for the movement. A key reason as to why Portland’s population has more than 70% non-Latino white is that black people were not allowed to reside in Oregon until the 20th century, Oregon has a long racist history since the state’s constitution banned Black residents till 1926.

Protests continue in Portland as children and families took to the streets of Portland to rally against systematic racism and police brutality. The groups marched chanting “no justice, no peace”, carried signs in support of the movement. Protesters say that they will continue to their nightly demonstrations outside the courthouse. Some protestors have also tossed fireworks, rocks, and bottles at the courthouse complex. The U.S. federal security agents clashed into Portland in an attempt to restore order. Tension is rising among protesters, and some of them also said that the arrival of national officers to Portland had added fuel to the fire of what had been peaceful protests.

Being aware of the different ways black people are impacted or privileged in different parts of the world, the protesters in Portland continue to do something that’s never happened before. By intentionally building and nurturing a beloved community that is bonded together through a beautiful struggle that is restorative, not depleting.
