  • Who is Lily Singh
  • Her Content
  • Three Important Things for her

Many Indian celebrities have earned international fame during their careers. Watching someone making India proud by featuring in international media is a satisfying feeling for, and we also get to know how the globe looks at them. And while film stars and singers have made their mark on the international forum, there is also a certain someone who has broken all records of the internet and is proudly an Indian.

She started from scratch and is snow one of the most influential people on the planet. She is Lily Singh. She is one of the top content creators for YouTube, earning in millions and having a fandom in both foreign soil and India.

The only women to break into the top ten highest-paid YouTube Star, Lilly began making videos since 2010. She mostly makes videos on Indian life using exaggerations and comedy. Connecting with her Indian - Punjabi roots, she makes videos, which are mostly the reactions on different situations from Indian parents. As she notes, “Making other people laugh helped make laugh.” Not only comedy videos but videos related to important messages are done by her, who once battled with depression.

Previously her life was monotonous. Waking up and working for hours. Come back home and repeat. Until one day she decided that this is not what she wants. These days she is excited to wake up every morning to tell stories. She tried to leave the shackles of systemic power and tradition. And so she became her boss. As with Indian parents, Lily listened to hers and pursued her bachelors in psychology and said would revert to it if her YouTube career didn’t work out. Earlier she used the pseudonym ‘Superwoman’ to post her content. This is because the name meant she could do anything. And she did it.

For her three things matter the most. Firstly, be a part of something bigger than yourself. Reaching out to millions with fresh and sway ways she has won the heart of millions. All of her videos have something everyone can relate to, and if not, the content she puts up is quite engaging. Secondly, money doesn’t always matter, and one should still chase growth. This phrase hits closer to home because of the famous dialogue from 3 Idiots, ‘Kabil Bano, Kamiyabi toh jhaak marke peeche aayegi’. And so Lily hustled hard for a year making as many videos she could. Youtube became her solace, and she did what she does best – comedy. For her personal growth is above all else and so she rejects those brands or ties ups which don’t speak to her. She never lets money hit her in the head. And third, step out of the comfort zone. She taught herself to make videos, write screenplays and make her stuff more connecting to familiar people.

When Lily recently came out as a bisexual, it was everything done to break the hardcore Indian traditions. For her, it was ‘Nerve-Wracking’. She felt that she should finally speak up about who she really is and shouldn’t contribute further to the silence culture as being silent does no use to anyone. Being yourself is one of the best things you can gift to yourself. She hopes that she can inspire more and more women to embrace themselves completely, especially in India, where sexual expression is still considered as a taboo.

The digital world has a lot of scope for those who tap into the power and potential of it. And using creativity, one can bring change into the world and inspire others. And Lily Singh has done precisely that. With her show, A Little Late with Lily, she is an inspiration to all those who have a passion for something, and if you hustle hard, you might end up where you are meant.
