One day at a time is a comedy-drama American sitcom which is based on Norman Lear’s 1975 series of the same name. The show follows the life of a Cuban-American family as they navigate the ups and downs of life.

One day at a time is a show full of warmth and empathy which is dedicated to telling stories about immigrant families and all that they face together. It is a series that showcases a family who is ready to change with the times and adapt to the many changes in modern society. This show does not miss any opportunity to grapple with serious modern issues in an old-fashioned style, all while remaining extremely funny. TV show’s lack of old-school sit-down-and-talk-about-it comedies has made it much easier for one day at a time to become so successful with its fourth season running and conceivably for four more seasons. One day at a time is remarkably eager to hash out all that fictional television families fail to talk about in front of a modern studio audience. The writers of this show take the time to incorporate an important message in every episode as well as make sure it is not too preachy, which makes this show special because that is something not many shows can do.

The show has its way of representing diverse thoughts and ideas, from Lydia being a deeply religious woman to Elena being a lesbian teenager and a social justice warrior this show gives a platform to showcase a variety of thoughts and ideas. One wonderful example of this is the different ways of how each family member reacted to Elena’s coming out.

An essential ingredient for the show’s success and its humor is Rita Moreno’s continued excellence as a Cuban mother, Lydia Alvarez, the eldest member of the Alvarez family who likes to constantly remind everyone around her that there is no one with the wit half as sharp as hers nor a day half as stylish. The show also gives a taste to the viewers that comedy does not have to be harsh or hurtful to anyone or any community.

There is something for everyone in this show. Characters like a funny and confident grandmother like Lydia, a struggling single mother like Penelope, an awkward teenager who wants to change the world like Elena, a cool person like Alex, and a best friend like Schneider is what makes the viewers like this show. Watching a family that is so kind and loving, gives the viewers much-needed comfort while reaffirming why families are so important.
