Google Play or G Pay is a digital wallet platform and online payment system. It was created by the Search-engine giant Google to power in-app and tap-to-pay purchases on mobile devices, allowing users to pay through their android devices, tablets, and even watches. The service also supports passes such as student ID cards, movie tickets, event tickets, boarding passes, etc. The app’s tremendous popularity can be traced to it bringing in cashback offers for every transaction.

After almost 2 years, certain leaks over the past few weeks have all led us to believe that Google Pay is introducing a ground-breaking feature into its platform. Even though there weren’t any confirmations regarding it, people were awaiting its unveiling. The wait is over as they have officially confirmed that Google Pay in India is rolling out its latest feature where people could add their NFC-powered debit and credit cards as payment methods in addition to the existing bank. This new feature would help Google to start the tokenized payment cards, something which was introduced in 2019 to enable safer online payments through the platform. The feature was set to roll out in a couple of weeks and was delayed until now.

The officials have been rolling out support for this new feature as more and more users are using it. The users first need to verify their card by using the OTP that they get from the bank and add the card to the app. Once the card has successfully been added, the tap and pay functionality that can be used at NFC-enabled terminals for making touchless payments using a smartphone will be available to them. The feature is not available for all users using Google Pay. Instead, it is released in a phased manner and they stated that they have been testing the game-changing feature since the beginning of the year. Google has said that the tokenized cards will be available for Visa cards that are issued by the following banks: Axis, HDFC, Kotak, and Standard Chartered banks.
