In Maharashtra, Shiv Sena, the ruling party targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the reopening of temples in the state amid the soaring COVID cases. They asked if the opposition party (NDA constituent) would be held liable if there is a surge in COVID-19 cases in the state following the relaxation. The BJP Unit in Maharashtra protested outside temples in different parts of the state last week, demanding the temples be reopened for worship.

Opposition Leader Devendra Fadnavis believes that people understand the ways of observing social distancing when the temples are reopened. The officials from Shiv Sena as a reply to the above statement pointed towards the violations of such norms during the party’s protests. They asked the opposition leaders to first understand the dire situation of Maharashtra before raising such unnecessary demands.

The BJP Unit ultimately warned the Uddhav Thackeray- led Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi(MVA) government that if they do not listen to the demands and keep the temples closed, they would forcibly reopen all the temples in the state. The threat was raised after a daylong “ghantanad andolan” protest across the state. The ongoing demand to reopen temples and other religious places have been going around for almost a month. But the MVA government is taking all precautionary measures to avoid another spike in the COVID-19 cases and thus is hesitant to allow their demands.

Fadnavis had earlier questioned the reasonability behind keeping strict restrictions for the opening of temples but allowing shopping malls and liquor shops to stay open. They stated that for millions of people around the nation, their mental peace is far superior to almost everything else, and temples are the gateway to it. The demand for reopening temples should not be allowed for political mental peace, but for the welfare of the citizens of our nation.
