'Nobel Prize for the Environment’ commonly known as the ‘Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement’ which is administered by the University of Southern California was awarded to conservation biologist Gretchen C. Daily and environmental economist Pavan Sukhdev for this year. The Tyler prize is one of the first international premier environmental awards. It was started in 1973 by the late John and Alice Tyler.

The Tyler Prize Executive Committee recognizes two outstanding individuals who have pioneered the valuing of natural capital, enhanced and preserved the global environment. The awardees this year are two pioneers in quantifying and illuminating the economic value of our natural environment.

We have seen increasing attacks on ecosystems and biodiversity from climate change and human exploitation in recent decades. We have also understood our dependency on nature and natural resources. From the air we breathe to the food that is put on our table every day is because of nature that we are destroying for our own selfish needs. We know that these resources are limited and that natural environments themselves enable economic development.

Gretchen C. Daily and Pavan Sukhdev are two experts in very different areas of research. But they have set an example in improving our understanding of nature’s value in supporting human wellbeing.

The 29-year old, Pavan Sukhdev is an international banker by training. He was the lead expert on the first report of The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) published in 2008. It has become a leading global initiative focussed on “making nature’s values visible”.

The work he has done on TEEB and Global Economy initiative he was awarded the 2020 Tyler Prize. Currently, he is the President of WWF and founder-chief executive of GIST Advisory.

Sukhdev along with Gretchen C. Daily is sharing the award. She is the co-founder of Natural Capital and director of the Center for Conservation Biology at Stanford University.

‘Green Economy Initiative', one of the nine Joint Crisis Initiatives launched in 2009 by the UN Secretary-General, Sukhdev was appointed to lead this while he was the Managing Director at Deutsche Bank.

You don't have to be an environmentalist to care about protecting the environment.
