Cinema transports you to a world outside your own. One of the ways it does that is by manipulating sounds. Sounds catch our attention as nothing else does. Sounds in movies are sometimes dramatic, scary, or exciting. You’ll never get that same feeling like in that of movies when you close and open doors or that epic sound of footsteps. This is done by Foley artists. The word Foley coms from Jack Foley who was a sound effects pioneer. He established the basic modern techniques of sound effects which are still used.

Foley artists are people who re-create sounds for video, film, and other media in post-production to enhance audio quality. This is one of the coolest jobs in the world that requires a deep knowledge of music, sound, and rhythm. Even though or eyes get stuck to the visuals, the sounds create an immense experience which makes it more realistic. These artists recreate sounds that cannot be recorded on sets. These are reproduced in a studio where these Foley artists view the content on-screen and break down the scene into individual sounds and recreates each sound separately with different props that they have and then finally mix them. These sounds include the shattering of glass pieces, animals and birds moving, wind blowing, any possible sound you expect. These artists use a variety of props to create different sounds.

Footsteps can sound differently on different surfaces like a wood floor, grass, sand, or water. These sounds are recreated by these artists by putting on the required type of shoes and walking on the appropriate surface to resemble the video. Poor quality sounds from the sets of movies are also recreated by them to make it more real. Footsteps, movement, and props are the three types of Foley. Movements include specific and detailed sounds of small movements that can be sounds of two people passing each other which enhances the scene. Props or specifics include sounds other than footsteps or movement. These include squeaky noise of doors or phones ringing.

It was first used in the 1920s during live broadcasts of radio plays. Sound effects played off a phonograph are usually of low-quality and unreliable. Thus they hired sound artists to create the effects.

Outside the field of movie makings, Foley can also extend to other types of sound which include nature documentary or performance in a theatre.

Foley sound makes the scene more realistic and immersive. Can you imagine a movie without background scores? It will be too quiet without Foley effects.
