The elder statesmen of Indian politics, Pranab Mukherjee, died on Monday at the age of 84. The former President of India has left his mark in India’s vast political history. He had been in a coma after a brain surgery which was done earlier this month to remove a blood clot and at the same time tested positive for coronavirus. The center has announced seven days of state mourning for our beloved former president. Our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi was the first to pay homage to one of the great leaders our nation has ever seen, saying that he was truly blessed to have Pranab Mukherjee’s guidance ever since he took office.

Mukherjee was brought to the Rajya Sabha by Indira Gandhi as a member of the Bangla Congress, a breakaway congress group that formed back in 1966 and later on merged with the Congress in 1970. The death of our ex-President marks the end of an era for the Congress as he was one of the last remaining political leaders to have worked alongside the great visionary, Indira Gandhi. The political journey he started in West Bengal when he was the election agent for the winning candidate VK Krishna Menon took a glorious journey over the years which left an indelible mark on the development of our nation. No matter the political and ideological differences, he was respected and admired across the political spectrum and by all sections of our society.

Mukherjee over the past few weeks had been getting a lot of get-well-soon wishes from politicians and personalities from around the nation. During the last stage, he had developed a lung infection and renal dysfunction. On the morning of his death, the doctors of Army Hospital in Delhi reported that there had been a decline in his condition. It was only a few hours later that he had gone into septic shock due to this lung infection. The whole of India mourns the loss of their former President and continues to remember all that he had done for the development and well-being of his nation.
