Dr. Kafeel Khan who is considered as the “savior of children” was arrested and jailed under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) for allegedly inciting violence by delivering hate speeches at anti-CAA-NRC protest rallies, by the Yogi Adityanath-led UP government. His official release was ordered by the Allahabad High Court on Tuesday and he stepped out of Mathura jail on September 2. He spent nearly 6 months amidst 150 inmates and came out victorious after an intense battle in and out of the court.

In the first interview after he got out, he was asked what was the first thought that came to his mind after seeing the High Court order. He exclaimed that he felt deeply thankful for all the people that had fought for him and that his faith in the Judiciary was reinforced. The High Court order recognized that his speech did not incite any violence, the district magistrate had selective reading and selective mention of my speed and also agreed to the fact that his detention was illegal. When asked about the CAA-NRC protests, he still believes that the “fight against CAA-NRC is a fight for our existence”. In his view, all regressive laws such as NSA, PSA, and AFSPA must be repealed as they are being misused by the police, the State, and its agencies to crush the voices of those who oppose them. Laws that violate our freedom of speech and the ones which criminalize a person’s opinion most be expunged. He explains the situation in Uttar Pradesh where the NSA is being invoked to arrest 100s of people.

When asked about his present plans, he replies that all he wants to do his spend sometime with his family, including his 11- month old son which he hasn’t seen for a long time. After that, he says that his priority will shift towards hosting free medical camps in Assam and Bihar to aid those in need in the flood-affected areas, where people are dying not only because of COVID-19 but also because of vector-borne diseases like Chikungunya and diarrhea. He plans on discussing this with his team and setting up free medical camps to help the poor section of the society who are currently being denied proper health care.
