Tennis stars Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal snubbed Djokovic’s call for the formation of the union

Djokovic mentioned that he respects Federer’s and Nadal’s decision

On Wednesday, the 2 September 2020, Novak Djokovic mentioned that he held no animosity towards rival tennis stars Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer after they rebuffed his call for the formation of a new tennis players’ association.

Djokovic recently revealed that he was spearheading a union for professional male tennis players. After the big revelation, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal called for ‘unity, not separation’.

After progressing to the U.S. Open third round, Djokovic stated that he respects Federer’s and Nadal’s choice of not getting involved with the association at the moment. Djokovic further mentioned that it’s Federer’s and Nadal’s opinion that it isn’t the right time to be a part of the association. Djokovic went on to say that he, however, doesn’t agree with that opinion.

Djokovic mentioned that his idea of forming an association wasn’t a new one and that he was trying to follow up with what the previous generations have attempted to do. Djokovic further mentioned that it is always the right time for a players’ association, and for the last twenty years, it has been the right time for such an association. He said that he is moving forward with the association now as in the past the idea was never accomplished and realized.

Djokovic insisted that the new association would not be a rival to the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour and would not boycott tournaments. The association would provide a platform for the players to raise their voices.

Djokovic said that the association would have the highest intention for the tennis players. The purpose is neither to fight anyone nor to fight for existence with the International Tennis Federation, ATP, or any other governing body.

Djokovic mentioned that at the moment there are people who do not want an association to be formed because at present there is a structural system in place that offers them protection, and that he understands all of that.
