When the schools got closed in March in order to stop the spread of COVID-19, most of us didn't anticipate that they would remain closed for such a long time. Providing schools learning at home for kids was at the dining room table or on the couch which is okay as we are all figuring things out and adjusting to the so-called new normal.

But as the uncertainty continues of whether the schools will be closed or open with the new year. It's a perfect time now to designate a special place in the home for learning. When we have a dedicated place to study, it helps us to reduce distractions and lower the stress levels. Therefore, we need to set up in the home a school space which can be fun and provide memorable learning activity that could also be accompanied by family.

Some tips to set up a learning space in our home for the school children:

  1. We need a space which is well lighted or tries hanging lights or colourful homemade decoration. This will help children in being awake and also in learning.

  2. Learning should not be boring. Therefore, this space should be incorporating some of the child's favourite thing. This will help him feel comfortable in the space and be excited to go there to learn.

  3. We need to understand the type of learner the child is. If the child is focused then we could select a low-traffic space in the home or try headphones to dull sound and if the kids need to move then we need to set a timer to set intervals for works and breaks.

  4. Space should be neat and organized. This will make learning not so overwhelming and will help the child to keep track of the learning materials which assignments they have completed and what still needs to be done.

When you set up a learning space in the home, we all need to make sure that the child continues learning. There are various researches which show that the children experience learning loss when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer months. Therefore, keeping the child engaged in learning during summer breaks will help him to ease back to school when the time comes and will ensure that they start the new year of the school on track.
