Paytm, the Digital payments company’s main app was restored on Google Play Store on Friday hours after being taken down on allegations of the policy violation. Paytm is one of India’s most valuable startup and claims over 50 million monthly active users.

The company that facilitates the use of wallets and payments bank services was removed from the Google Play store for violation of the policy on sport betting activities. This removal does not affect the people who already had the app downloaded on their phones and they will be able to access its service as normal. The apps were visible on iOS platforms. The Paytm app was back on Google Play store after it removed the 'cashback' feature from a recently-launched game on the application.

Google removed the Paytm app from the Play Store while other apps like Paytm Money, Paytm mall, Paytm for Business, and a few more were still available on the platform. Paytm issued an official statement and said Google suspended the app as it violated Play Store policies on gambling.

Google’s Play Store policy on gambling

Google prohibits online casinos and other unregulated gambling apps on its play store platform. Fantasy sports platforms like Dream 11 are also kept out in addition to the gambling apps. Those apps that lead their consumers to an external site that allows them to participate in paid tournaments to real money violates Play Store policies and thus are kept out from the tech giant.

Google’s Pay app dominates the payments market in India, and Android commands about 99% of the smartphone market share in the country. Fantasy sports, where users select their favorite players and win if their preferred teams or players play well, is not illegal in most Indian states, even though sports betting is banned in India.

Paytm through a tweet informed its users that the payments app will be back on Google’s Play Store and is temporarily unavailable. “It will be back very soon. All your money is completely safe, and you can continue to enjoy your Paytm app as normal”, it said.
