Recently, the audit report of the PM Cares Fund was made public. An analysis of the audit report revealed that the Prime Minister of India, Mr Narendra Modi had contributed Rs. 2.25 lakhs towards the initial corpus of the fund which was set up to deal Covid-19 crisis in India.  

The PM Cares Fund was set up on 27 March 2020 to tackle the coronavirus pandemic. It has been reported that in mere 5 days, the fund received a contribution of 3076 crores excluding the initial corpus contributed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Many leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party including the Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Piyush Goyal lauded the Prime Minister on social media for donating the initial corpus to the PM Cares Fund.

PM Modi’s contribution to the PM Cares Fund is not the first time that PM Modi has contributed towards a public cause from his wealth. PM Modi has a legacy of making contributions to numerous public causes ranging from Clean Ganga mission to contributing to initiatives for the education of the girl child and the welfare of numerous underprivileged people in the country. PM Modi’s total donations towards all such public causes/initiatives is over Rs. 103 crores.

PM Modi donated Rs. 21 lakhs in 2019 to the corpus fund for the welfare of Kumbh Mela’s sanitation workers. PM Modi reportedly made the said donation from his savings.

PM Modi received the Seoul Peace Prize in South Korea in 2018 and he was given the prize money of Rs. 1.3 crores. PM Modi had immediately donated the entire prize money to Namami Gange programme aimed at cleaning the river Ganga. Recently, PM Modi auctioned his mementoes and raised Rs. 3.4 crores from the said auction. Furthermore, PM Modi auctioned the gifts he had received till 2015 and raised an additional amount of Rs. 8.35 crores. The amount received from both the auctions was donated towards the Namami Gange Programme.

PM Modi had on the completion of his tenure as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, contributed Rs. 21 lakhs from his savings for the education of the daughters of the Gujarat government’s staff.

A donation of Rs. 89.96 crores were also made by PM Modi to the Kanya Kelavani Fund by auctioning all the gifts that PM Modi received when he served as a Chief Minister.
