  • Tennis as a popular sport
  • Champions Osaka and Thiem for the U.S Grand Slam
  • Highlighting controversies during the tournament.

Tennis is one of the most popular sports around the world. We are unaware of the fact that tennis ranks No.4 for having millions of followers. Things were different at the U.S.Open this year due to the pandemic situation. But rather than discouraging themselves Naomi Osaka and Dominic Thiem became champions. They fulfilled their destiny. There was a huge debate for finalizing the stadium and the United States Tennis Association announced in June that the Grand Slam would be held at New York, which was once the epicenter for the coronavirus pandemic. Various concerns were raised by the players relating to the fact that how would they travel to the United States for the game. The organizers tried their level best to address their concerns. They designed numerous rules to mitigate health risks but they continued preparations for the Grand Slam. The mandatory rule was to use a facemask which became a tool for Osaka to protest against racial injustice in the United States.

Osaka used different face masks all through her seven matches featuring the name of a black American who suffered racial injustice. She said that she feels herself like a vessel to spread awareness. Victoria Azarenka also showed enough motivation to reach the Grand Slam final after 7 years.

But the wait for first slam finally ended for Thiem. This 27-year-old had lost three finals in which twice to Rafa Nadel and once to Novak Djokovic the world's No 1 player. He thought that he was heading for another heartbreak. But he somehow managed to come back and to hoist the U.S Open trophy. But there were a lot of critics who argued that Thiem did not have to face any of the 'Big Three ' of men's tennis. Nadal opted out due to COVID 19 pandemic situation, Roger Federer got injured and Djokovic defaulted for hitting a line judge with a ball in the fourth round. This increased the chances for Thiem. This Austrian thus won the Grand Slam trophy and emerged as the first winner outside the Big Three since 2016. He said that he achieved his life goal which he had for many years. There were also several controversies like Frenchman Benoit Paire was withdrawn from the contest due too the fact that he tested positive for corona. Those who have been in close contact with him also faced strict measures. Kristina Mladenovic was also pulled out and health authorities asked her to sit in quarantine. But once the tournament started none of the players tested corona positive.
