Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari has prompted the American electric carmaker Tesla to begin production of its electric vehicles in India as early as they can. The Union Minister assured Tesla that the government will support the electric-automobile manufacturer to create industrial clusters in the country. During Nitin Gadkari’s speech at Raisina Dialogue 2021, he addressed a lot of questions ranging from India's progress in electric mobility, EV battery manufacturing, and vehicle scrappage policy to name a few. At the event, Nitin Gadkari revealed that he had a video conference with Tesla management and has suggested them to start manufacturing in India. The reason is that Tesla is already taking a lot of auto components from Indian manufacturers. Hence, this is the golden opportunity for the electric car manufacturer to take. Urging Tesla to establish its manufacturing facility in India at the earliest, the Union Minister assured Tesla that it could build its vendors and export vehicles to other countries as well. Gadkari also mentioned that Tesla should begin its operations in India soon, as other EV manufacturers operating in India will not take long to manufacture cars of Tesla's standard. Gadkari highlighted that day by day the Indian products are improving and within two years the Indian Market will see electric vehicles of Tesla’s standards. Hence, in the interest of the well-established electric-automobile manufacturer, Gadkari suggested they start manufacturing at the earliest as this will be beneficial for the famous electric-automobile manufacturer. However, Tesla has not confirmed its plans to start its electric vehicle production facilities in India. As of now, the world's most valuable carmaker is only looking at major Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru to sell its vehicles. Tesla had already registered itself with ROC Bangalore as Tesla India Motors and Energy Private in January this year. The Karnataka Chief Minister has recently claimed that Tesla has confirmed setting up its first Indian facility in the state. As soon as Tesla begins its production in India, it will be counted as its second facility in Asia outside China. As per recent media reports, Tesla is likely to begin its India business by bringing in the most affordable Model 3 sedan by the end of the year. Tesla Model 3 will supposedly be imported via the completely built unit (CBU) route and is most likely to be priced from Rs. 55 lakh onwards.
