2,61,500 more Covid-19 cases have been reported in the last 24 hours, Cumulatively Covid cases have come up to be 1,47,88,109, said the Union health ministry this Sunday morning. Panic within India has risen since the reporting of over two lakh new Covid-19 cases for the last four days. A new strain, which allegedly has a double mutation, is believed to be pushing forward India’s deadlier second wave of coronavirus that has made it the second worst-hit country in the world. Maharashtra has been standing at 63,729 with the highest number of daily new covid cases. Uttar Pradesh has reported 27,360, cases and Delhi has reported 19,486 fresh cases. A high number of new fatalities has been reported with the numbers reaching 1,501 as more people have succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours. In addition to this, 1,38,423 have recovered in the same time frame, taking the total number of recoveries to 1,28,09,643. Presently the number of active cases is 18,01,316, breaching the 18-lakh mark. Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) stated that India has conducted tests of 26,65,38,416 samples for Covid-19. 11 states and UTs, which also included Delhi, raised the demand for more supply of oxygen cylinders, vaccine doses, and Remdesivir. Given the circumstances, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that all necessary measures must be taken to increase the availability of hospital beds for Covid-19 patients and has also asked the local administrations to be proactive and sensitive towards people's concerns in these tough times. He also checked the situation regarding the supply of Remdesivir and other relevant medicines and asked for the installation of approved medical oxygen plants to speed up. Due to many states reporting issues of shortage and black marketing of remdesivir injection, National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) said that pharmaceutical companies have lowered the prices after the government's intervention. Renowned Drug companies such as Dr Reddy's Laboratories, and Cipla have reduced the prices of their brands of remdesivir injection (100 mg/vial). India has so far administered 12,26,22,590 anti-Covid doses. The total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered, on Saturday, in the country reached close to 12 crores. The vaccination drive in the country was rolled out on 16 January. The next stage of coronavirus vaccination started on 1 March for the people who are above the age of 60 years and for those of the age 45 and above with specified comorbid conditions. India has extended the vaccination drive to include everybody aged 45 last week.
