The Japanese auto-giant Honda recently announced that it would end production of all internal combustion engine ICE vehicles by 2040. This future-forward strategy comes along with the group’s efforts and plans to achieve carbon neutrality by the year 2050. Giving an overview of their objectives, Honda’s president Toshihiro Mibe stated that the extent of the brand’s focus would be on building advances in robotics, clean mobility, advanced power trains, as well as alternative energy sources. If the Japanese auto-giant is to make this massive commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050, it will apply to its product-related and corporate activities. This will mean a ground-up overhaul of the supply chain to make sure products are made of 100% sustainable materials and a significant shift towards the evolution of environmentally friendly and sustainable powertrain technologies. Summarising the roadmap further, for the global motor vehicle giant, Honda declared that their complete line of cars on sale in Europe would be electrified by 2022. This will be the first vital milestone for the company, as it hopes to have 40% of its revenue from EVs and Fuel Cell electrics by the year 2030. Honda predicts that this percentage should keep rising from there on, with 80% targeted by 2035, leading to 100 per cent by the year 2040. What makes Honda’s strategy different is its non-committal strategy towards energy sources. While the brand has always insisted that Fuel Cell Electrics are more eco-friendly than their lithium-ion counterparts, their work on Solid-state batteries provides another alternative to lithium-ion batteries. This places Honda with a unique advantage with multiple future-ready energy choices being developed simultaneously. Honda says that the SSD battery technology should be ready for launch in the second half of this decade. Outlining the road map further, Honda president Toshihiro Mibe stated that as per the last fiscal year, the brand enabled Honda R&D to focus on the research of advanced technologies, are researching leading-edge environmental and safety technologies for the development of a society that aims towards a zero environmental impact and a collision-free society. The brand is also making progress with research on various technologies that can expand mobility into the third and fourth dimensions, into the skies, the ocean, outer space, and the area of robotics. Honda president also added that they would strengthen their original research of technologies by ensuring optimal allocation of resources towards the field of advanced and cutting-edge technologies.
