Godzilla vs. Kong has already taken off in theatres with a mind-boggling response from the audience over this past weekend. The film has earned more than $285.4 million (about Rs. 2,093 crores) worldwide at the box office through Sunday, as it continues to beat films like Wonder Woman 1984, to become the biggest Pandemic release so far. Godzilla vs. Kong has been titled as the film with the Best Opening Day Box office since March 2020 considering the number of failures the box office hit, during the pandemic. The epic saga has managed to break the dry spell that struck the Box office last year, where even movies like Tenet could not sustain. The film smashed World Box Office as it garnered nearly $300 in a matter of 12 days. Godzilla vs. Kong premiered on March 24, with India being among the first markets to premier the record-setter. The most awaited arrival of the film in US theatres and on HBO Max simultaneously assisted Godzilla vs. Kong to pocket $48.5 million (about Rs. 355 crores) in the first five days that included the long Easter weekend. The film in India has reportedly stockpiled $6.07 million (an estimated Rs. 44.57 crores) since its release 12 days ago. However, since the announcement of the Maharashtra lockdown and curfew, the entertainment industry has been anticipating a major loss. India has crossed its mark of 1,00,000 daily cases on Sunday, with Maharashtra contributing to 57,074 out of them. The state with the most number of screens in the country has announced the closure of cinema halls until April 30 as a part of new lockdown measures to curb the rapid spread of COVID-19 second wave in India which could impact the earnings of the film in Mumbai at least. Mumbai, the city with the most screens in Maharashtra, recorded over 11,000 cases on April 4. It is no surprise that these two iconic titans would lead the chargeback to theatres around the world and even exceed expectations in such a massive way, said Andrew Cripps, Warner Bros. Studio’s president of international distribution. The film has made incredible numbers, China being its biggest contributor. Australia, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico have encountered robust openings as well. The global response after the release of the film can be a positive sign for the industry, as people are starting to regain their enthusiasm towards entertainment in a pandemic world.
