Potentially hazardous asteroid heading towards the earth.
NASA has shared details on a giant asteroid that’s going to pass at a very close distance or maybe it can also hit the earth during the earliest march. Asteroid 2013 BO76, which can be calculated about 1.3 km in size will come close to earth when the orbit matches with that of the earth are predicted by NASA on March 4th but till not reached yet. JPL that tracks the objects in the outer sky spotted the asteroid heading towards the earth as 49, 11,298 kilometers, of about 1.3 kilometers in size and labelled as potentially hazardous. When the asteroid is compared with the objects on the planet, it has a similar size as US empires state-building. The flying speed of the asteroid is about 49513.45 kilometers per hour. NASA‘s Jet propulsion laboratory released the orbital parameters of the asteroid along with the diagram around the earth which enlarges beyond the orbit of Mars.
The near-Earth object called 138971 (2001 CB21) is on its route to the sun and under 400 days completing its orbit. GIANLUCA an astronomer at the virtual telescope project in Italy clicked an image of 2001 CB21 on February 23, when it was 6.2 million miles away. Once the asteroid comes close to the earth its next approach to the earth can be in the year 2043 when it may arrive at 48,15,555 kilometers from the earth. The 138971 (2001 CB21) was first spotted by the Lincoln near-earth asteroid Research (LINEAR) program, which has been responsible for more than 24% of the discoveries of all known potentially hazardous asteroids. The program pointed out almost 14 million observations of asteroids and comets and 4 potentially hazardous objects. The large asteroid DIDYMOS and its small moon currently pose no threat to earth.
In September 2022, NASA plans to change the asteroid orbit by crashing a 1,340-pound (610kg) probe into DIDYMOS’ moon at a speed of approximately 14,000 mph (22,500 KPH). According to NASA joint propulsion laboratory (JPL), an asteroid is classified as a near-earth object when its distance from our planet is less than 1.3 times the distance from the earth to the sun i.e.93 million miles. Why the asteroid is potentially hazardous (PHA). Any near-earth asteroid that comes nearer to the earth below the distance of 0.05 astronomical units (19.5 lunar distances) or 7.5 million kilometers comes under the category of the hazardous asteroid. The union of international astronomy has a list of over 1500 hazardous asteroids. NASA stated that there exist many asteroids in the solar system but most are located in the asteroid belt, but that doesn’t mean that the asteroids are only found there.
Some asteroid moves in front of Jupiter which is called a Trojan asteroid and these asteroids are called near-earth object. NASA keeps a close eye on such because sometimes it comes nearer to the earth as dangerously hazardous. The space agency has stated 3 asteroids that will be dangerously nearer to the earth on September 2021; one of them will be known as 2010RJ53 and will reach at a distance of 366,000 kilometers from the earth.
