IAF and Navy tie-up with DRDO to acquire CHAFF defence technology
The Indian Navy and The Indian Air Force have tied up with the Defence Research Development Organisation to get the CHAFF technology, which protects the warship from an anti-ship missile during hostilities. After the United States, India is now the second country to develop this ability, a major Atmanirbhar push in the field of defence. What is CHAFF? CHAFF is a critical defence technology used to protect fighter aircraft and naval ships from missiles (enemy radar-guided) during the war. The significance lies in the fact that a very less quantity of CHAFF material is deployed in the air as a decoy to deflect enemy missiles to ensure the safety of the fighter aircraft or naval ship. This advanced CHAFF technology to defend the naval ships and the fighter aircraft against modern-day broadband radar threats (including high frequency ) was developed by the DRDO.
The technology includes three variants of CHAFF rockets namely Short Range CHAFF Rocket ( SRCR ), Medium-Range CHAFF Rocket ( MRCR ), and Long Range CHAFF Rocket ( LRCR ) these three have been inducted into the Indian Navy after successful user trials. An advanced CHAFF cartridge – 188/l for the Indian Air Force has also been developed by the DRDO, having major advantages over the CHAFF available worldwide in terms of its better efficacy against higher frequency radar threats in modern warfare scenarios. After extensive user trials, the IAF assessed the performance of indigenous chaff cartridge – 188 /l and started the process of induction into Indian Air Force.
DRDO CREATED SPECIAL TECHNOLOGY FOR THE INDIAN AIR FORCE. The DRDO has created an advanced chaff cartridge – 118 /I specifically for the Indian air force, because of the higher effectiveness, significant benefits over the chaff currently used by other countries are said to be offered. The air force determined the performance of the DRDO's indigenous chaff cartridge – 118/I was satisfactory and began the process of inducting the same after successful comprehensive user trials. CHAFF is an electronic equivalent to smoke, says DRDO The DRDO explains what Chaff is and how it works. It says that “ There exists today an electronic equivalent to ‘smoke’ and it is called CHAFF (during world war II, called ‘window’. The DRDO explains that instead of scattering or absorbing electromagnetic energy, as in the case of smoke, it reflects electromagnetic energy to confuse or deceive an enemy system.
