Coal India Trade Unions went on their 3 days strike on Thursday protesting against the Government for allowing commercial coal mining, a move that may hit around 4 million tonnes of production. Coal India accounts for 80 percent of domestic coal output.

On average coal, India produces 1.3 million tonnes of coal every day so the strike would hit around 4 million tones of coal production approximately. Workers employed in Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) did not go to the work and as a result, emergency services in the mines have been paralyzed.

On Wednesday, the virtual meeting of the Government with Coal India Trade Union failed. A virtual meeting between representatives of Coal India Trade Union and Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi held on Wednesday. In the meeting, the minister informed the unions that the decision of commercial mining is taken by the Central Government and it is considered to be the only way to increase the production of coal. But the representatives of the trade union were still against the decision, the minister said.

The minister did not accept their demand to withdraw the decision taken by the government of commercial mining so they went on a three days strike from 2 to 4th of July, he further added.

Commercialization of coal mining would have an impact on the workers as the private companies would enter the market and they will exploit the labor by paying less and they might also have to work in the substandard working conditions.

This move of Government has triggered the trade unions and they have called for the nationwide strike. This will have an impact on coal production and income.
