So in this, interview with the former president of India will be one of inspirational talk and the conversation begins with greetings: "today we Honour to have the former president of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and thanks for joining us today".
- Can you tell us something about knowledge?
"I designed a four-line poem like theme called creativity, which I made a million children repeat. Learning is something which uses creativity, creativity which leads to thinking, thinking provides knowledge and knowledge makes you great."
- You were born in Rameshwaram and 1931 What are the biggest differences you see in India as it was then and today?
"Well I was orbited around the sun 76 times, in these 76 years I have seen when I was young boy, the second world war was coming to an end and I saw the effect of war and injuries healing, I saw India attained freedom when I was a schoolboy on 15th August 1947, India achieved its freedom a great day and happy movement. I have seen the green revolution, white revolution, and growth of ICT information communication technology, and I was involved in India's space program which is one of the successful programs in the country."
- You mentioned your involvement in the Indian Rocket program, could you please tell us about the experience what is the main lesson you learned?
"I worked for Indian space research organization for about 20 years, because of the youth power the program got succeeded and the most important area is human resource development. I learned one of the important things in both space and missile program is to know not only how to handle success but also how to handle failure" I want youngsters to understand how to manage failure because any task you do, you have to come across the problem. The problem should not become the captain of the individual or project chief, but the project chief should become a captain for problems so this is what I have learned. Well, the main lesson I learned was how multiple technical teams and multiple departments of the government of India work together with the industrial partnership."
- How did you come to become a president of India what leadership quality do you think are needed to a country that is so huge and complex?
"I was elected as the president of India from 2002 to 2007. The leader not to become a president but to any political leadership or technological leadership, you have to have five traits one leader should have 1. Leaders must have a mission 2. He must be able to travel into an unexplode path, 3.leader must know how to manage the success the most importantly the failure 4. Leaders should have the courage to make decisions 5. To have nobility in management."
- Could you give us an example from your own life experience on manging the failure?
"In 1973 I was a project director for the satellite launch vehicle program put a Rohini satellite orbit by 1980, I was provided with the management structure and money was given then human power and only they said was to put satellite by 1980, when the time came 1979 I bypassed the computer and I went on manual launched the rockets the rocket which had four stages 1st stage was successful 2nd stage separated it got into trouble, instead of the satellite going to orbit it went all the way to the Bay of Bengal. That was the biggest failure, the chairman of the organization took up the responsibility to answer a press conference. After a year in 1980 we succeed, the press conference came then the chairman said you go take the conference, the message is that when the failure occurred the leader of the organization took the failure, and during success, the chairman gave it to his team."
