A.K. Antony, Former Defence Minister, and senior Congress leader, on Monday, said that the Gandhi family “never interfered” in any defense deals during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) regime. He also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government of pursuing “vendetta politics without an iota of truth.” He added that Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have never intervened in any of the defense deals and Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) has manufactured lies and spreading them.

He told the reporters that the team consisting of Air Force, SPG and defense ministry officials made recommendations and the decision to give the helicopter contract to AgustaWestland was purely a “professional decision” made on the basis of these recommendations. According to him, the decision was never influenced by politics. He further added that he was the one who ordered CBI investigation and not the BJP government when the report from Italy said there was corruption in this case. (UPA) the government took an unusual decision to fight this case in Italy against AgustaWestland and won the case.

The Congress and the BJP have been engaged in a cold war of words since Saturday. While the Congress alleged PM Modi and his government were AgustaWestland's protectors and promoters, while the BJP accused it of defending Christian Michel, an alleged middleman in the deal, and asked why it was scared of a probe into the case.  The statements of Mr. Antony came after Enforcement Directorate informing Delhi court that Christian Michel, the alleged middleman in the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper scam, had passed on a paper containing questions on “Mrs. Gandhi” to his counsel Aljo K Joseph, a former Youth Congress office-bearer.
