NPP (National People’s Party) founded by Purno Agitok Sangma is led by Conrad Sangma is the ruling party in Meghalaya. It is also recognized as a state party in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Nagaland. It became the first political party from the North East to get national party status. “The party has fulfilled the eligibility condition for being a recognized as a national party as laid down in paragraph 6B (iii) [recognized as a state party in at least four states],” said Election Commission of India Secretary Pramod Kumar Sharma.
Conrad Sangma tweeted, “Thank you North East for all your support.” He said that it was a very happy and emotional moment for all those in the party as well as its supporters. He added that this will motivate them to work better for the region and for its people. The EC order stated, “Review of poll performance of the National People's Party in the general election to the Legislative Assembly of Arunachal Pradesh, 2019 shows that the candidates set up by the Party have polled 14.55% of the valid votes polled in the said general election, and in addition, the Party has won five out of the sixty seats in the Legislative Assembly.” The National People’s Party has one MP in the Lok Sabha. Conrad Sangma’s sister Agatha Sangma won the election from the Tura Lok Sabha constituency in Meghalaya.
