Senior Congress leader and former Andhra Pradesh cabinet minister M. Mukesh Goud passed away in Hyderabad on Monday at the age of 60. Goud had been battling cancer for the past seven months and was admitted to a private hospital.

The news of Goud’s death comes just a day after another senior Congress leader and former union minister S. Jaipal Reddy passed away.

Goud had served as a cabinet minister in the Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy government from 2004 to 2009. He held the Backward Classes and Warehousing and Marketing portfolios during his tenure. His son M. Vikram Goud is a party functionary of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC).

Mukesh Goud had won the Maharajgunj assembly seat in 2004 and the Goshamahal constituency in 2009 after it was created and was known as a strong Backward Classes leader. He was credited with winning the Goshamahal seat despite the constituency falling under the old city area, which, led by Hyderabad Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi, is considered a bastion of All India Majilis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). Goud, however, was also known to be close to the AIMIM leadership.

In spite of not being completely fit, Goud contested the Goshamahal seat in the 2018 Telangana assembly polls, but lost to incumbent T. Raja Singh. Several senior Congress leaders, including Rajya Sabha MP Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mallikarjun Kharge and N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, visited his residence at Jubilee Hills to pay homage after news of his death broke.

Chief Minister of Telangana, K. Chandrashekhar Rao, also sent a condolence message.
