With the 5 constituencies in Kerala going to bypolls today, political novice LDF seems to be making its place as a force to be reckoned with in opposition to the seasoned, congress-led UDF. In its tireless efforts to win back the trust of its voters after being swept out in the Parliamentary elections, the LDF has presented Manu Roy, a practicing lawyer as its candidate against Kochi Deputy Mayor T.J. Vinod who, for 25 years has been a stalwart in Ernakulam politics.

Following the UDF’s suit, the LDF has also gone ahead to field its candidate the Latin Catholic community in line of the circulated sentiment that the community has been ignored by the front in the process of candidate selection for the previous Assembly and parliamentary elections.

While the BJP is also trying its luck in the constituency by fielding C.G. Rajagopal, same as 2011, the major contest remains between the two fronts.  While on one hand, T.J. Vinod had been a permanent face in the Kochi Corporation council in various capacities for the past 24 years and was also in control of additional organisational responsibility as president of the District Congress Committee. Mr. Roy, on the other, has been active in the social service sector besides his court practice. Mr. Roy will have to put extraordinary efforts to represent the constituency in the State Assembly apart from having to face an upbeat Congress-led UDF in the city constituency.

The polls today will decide whether the LDF with its incessant campaigning has managed to sway popular opinion of the constituencies in its favour.
